Prom not for everyone
That special day is upon you. You rent your suit. Get a haircut. Even wash behind the ears. You pick up your date and make your way to the school ball. So too did Malcolm Pimentel. Or so he wanted. He was denied to bring his intended date to the ball by rector Father Paul Martin from St Patrick’s College in Wellington. Why you ask? Very simple, the date was another male, former pupil Keith Labad. That does not sit well with the Catholic school. The now official statement from Fr Martin is that only pupils from the college are allowed and no boys from other colleges of old boys. Well Malcolm was clearly told that if he wanted to attend he would have to bring a girl. Like the picture above from the schools homepage shows, they don’t really have a problem with getting boys to take their shirts off. Ok now make room. Move aside. Please step forward, The Human Rights Commission. Although they had not heard of this case yet they did comment saying a few complaints like this are filed with them every year. But if they found out that Malcolm and Keith were excluded because of wanting to go together they would throw around some articles from the Human Rights Act. So watch your back Fr Martin.
